CLAY TILES

These are the longest lasting roofs. A good quality tile will outlast slates & metal roofs, not to mention asphalt or wood shingle roofs. The quality depends on the way the tile is manufactured, the quality of the clay, timing of backing in ovens or by the sun. In the roman era, the tiles used to be baked like bricks...in the sun. The shape of the tiles used to be so un-even because of weather variations. The hotter the weather, the quicker the clay would bake and the tile would have a tendency to shrink or curl. The cooler the temperatures, the better the tile would cure. Interestingly, the “barrel” tile, as it's called today, was made in early days by applying fresh clay on the arms and legs of people, forming the barrel shape. They were then laid out in the sun for baking. That is why the ancient tiles are so un-even (shape-wise). Naturally, the longevity of the roof depends on the quality of the flashing, fasteners, roof ventilation and workmanship. Clay tile roofs need to be maintained as well.

Click for more Photos of this Project This home, built in the early 1900s had an existing clay tile roof. CMP removed the existing roof system and all gutters. We installed a mix of historical clay tiles and new tiles with new copper gutters & flashing. Click for more Photos of this Project This home was also built in the early 1900's. Years ago, the owners bought the house and had it moved. CMP did both the renovations and additions, and naturally, the new roof! The distinctive green clay tile is hand made and the house was brightened with copper flashing and copper gutters.
