SLATE

Slate is one of the most durable roofing materials available. Generally, if a slate roof is installed properly (making sure of a proper ventilation, proper flashing with the right material, proper fasteners, proper workmanship, etc…) it will outlast 3 generations or more. However, slate is a rock, and rocks have idosyncraces. Tiles tend to crack from time to time from thermal expansion, impacts and other forces. while a slate roof will last ages, it MUST be maintained. The most widely used slate is quarried in Vermont and all slate comes in many varying qualities, depending upon the region it was quarried. Quality of slate depends upon its density; the more dense the slate, the more durable slates are. Custom Metal has completed many slate roofs, all over the East Coast. Vermont slates and copper flashing were not installed according to industry standards. The home was built in mid-1990.
